A uniform meter scale of mass 0.24 kg is made of steel. It is kept on two wedges, W1\mathrm{W}_1 and W2\mathrm{W}_2, in a horizontal position. W1\mathrm{W}_1 is at a distance of 0.2 m from one of its ends, while W2\mathrm{W}_2 is at distance of 0.4 m from the other enIf the force on the scale is N1\mathrm{N}_1 due to W1\mathrm{W}_1 and N2\mathrm{N}_2 due to W2\mathrm{W}_2, then: (take g=10.0ms−2g=10.0 \mathrm{ ms}^{-2} )

Options

  1. AN1=1.6N\mathrm{N}_1=1.6 \mathrm{ N} and N2=0.8N\mathrm{N}_2=0.8 \mathrm{ N}
  2. BN1=0.8N\mathrm{N}_1=0.8 \mathrm{ N} and N2=1.6N\mathrm{N}_2=1.6 \mathrm{ N}
  3. CN1=0.6N\mathrm{N}_1=0.6 \mathrm{ N} and N2=1.8N\mathrm{N}_2=1.8 \mathrm{ N}
  4. DN1=1.8N\mathrm{N}_1=1.8 \mathrm{ N} and N2=0.6N\mathrm{N}_2=0.6 \mathrm{ N}

Correct answer

C. N1=0.6N\mathrm{N}_1=0.6 \mathrm{ N} and N2=1.8N\mathrm{N}_2=1.8 \mathrm{ N}

Step-by-step solution

As the scale is in equilibrium, net torque must be zero, N1d1−N2d2=0N1×0.3=N2×0.13N1=N2\begin{aligned} \mathrm{N}_1 d_1-\mathrm{N}_2 d_2 & =0 \\ \mathrm{ N}_1 \times 0.3 & =\mathrm{N}_2 \times 0.1 \\ 3 \mathrm{ N}_1 & =\mathrm{N}_2 \end{aligned} Also, force must be balance, N1+N2=W(mg)N1+3N2=0.24×104N1=2.4N1=0.6NN2=3N1=3×0.6=1.8N\begin{aligned} \mathrm{N}_1+\mathrm{N}_2 & =\mathrm{W}(\mathrm{mg}) \\ \mathrm{N}_1+3 \mathrm{ N}_2 & =0.24 \times 10 \\ 4 \mathrm{ N}_1 & =2.4 \\ \mathrm{ N}_1 & =0.6 \mathrm{ N} \\ \mathrm{ N}_2 & =3 \mathrm{ N}_1=3 \times 0.6=1.8 \mathrm{ N} \end{aligned}
