NTA Abhyas NEET2020Chemistryp Block Elements (Group 15, 16, 17 & 18)Practice
Which of the following statements are true. (i) In the structure of HNO 3 , the N − O bond ( 121 pm ) is shorter than the N − OH bond ( 140 pm ) . (ii) All the P − Cl bonds in PCl 5 are not equivalent. (iii) I − Cl is more reactive than I 2 .
Options
- A(i) and (ii)
- B(ii) and (iii)
- C(i) and (iii)
- D(i),(ii) and (iii)
Correct answer
D. (i),(ii) and (iii)
Step-by-step solution
(i) N − O bond is shorter than N − OH bond in HNO 3 molecule. It can be understood with the help of resonating structures of HNO 3 molecule. As we can see from the resonating structures, there is double bond character between N − O bonds but there is always single bond character between N − OH bond. This is because of no pi-bonding occurring between nitrogen and oxygen of − OH group. Double bond is shorter than single bond. So N − O bond is shorter than N − OH bond in HNO 3 molecule. (ii) There are two bonds in PCl
