An organic compound containing one oxygen gives red colour with ceric ammonium nitrate, decolourises alkaline KMnO 4 , responds to iodoform test and shows geometrical isomerism. It should be:
Options
- APh-CH=CH-CH 2 OH
Correct answer
1
Step-by-step solution
Ceric ammonium nitrate test is shown by alcohols. So, the compound should contain an alcoholic group. R - OH   + Ce NO 3 6 - 2 → R - O - Ce ( NO 3 ) 5 - 2   + H + + NO 3 - Alcoholic group is oxidised by KMnO 4 (strong oxidising agent) and KMnO 4 itself gets reduced to K 2 MnO 4 . So, its purple colour gets discharged. For positive Iodoform test, compound should have CH 3 - C = O group. So in this compound, firstly OH group get oxidised to C = O , then it shows iodoform test. Ph - CH = CH - CH ( OH )
