The difference in the oxidation state of Xe between the oxidised product of Xe formed on complete hydrolysis of XeF 4 and XeF 4 is

Correct answer

2

Step-by-step solution

Hydrolysis of XeF 4 will give XeO 3 . This hydrolysis reaction is a redox reaction. This redox reaction is an example of disproportionation reaction. 6 XeF 4 + 12 H 2 O → 4 Xe   +   2 XeO 3 + 24 HF + 3 O 2 The oxidation states of Xenon in the reactant and product is XeO 3 : Xe ( + 6 ) XeF 4 : Xe ( + 4 ) Hence, the difference in oxidation state is 2 .
