Given below are two statements :

Statement-I : Methane and steam passed over a heated NiNi catalyst produces hydrogen gas.

Statement-II : Sodium nitrite reacts with NH4Cl{NH}_{4}Cl to give H2O,N2{H}_{2}O, {N}_{2} and NaClNaCl.

In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

Options

  1. AStatement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
  2. BBoth the statements I and II are incorrect
  3. CStatement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
  4. DBoth the statements I and II are correct

Correct answer

D. Both the statements I and II are correct

Step-by-step solution

In steam-methane reforming, methane reacts with steam under 3–25bar3 – 25bar pressure in the presence of a nickel catalyst to produce hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and a relatively small amount of carbon dioxide. Steam reforming is endothermic, that is, heat must be supplied to the process for the reaction to proceed.

NaNO2+NH4Cl→∆N2+NaCl+H2O{NaNO}_{2} + {NH}_{4}Cl\overset{∆}{\to}{N}_{2} + NaCl + {H}_{2}O

as NH4NO2→∆N2+H2O{NH}_{4}{NO}_{2}\overset{∆}{\to}{N}_{2} + {H}_{2}O

Hence, both the statements are correct.
