Given below are two statements:

Statement I : The chlorides of BeBe and AlAl have Cl-bridged structure. Both are soluble in organic solvents and act as Lewis bases.

Statement II: Hydroxides of BeBe and AlAl dissolve in excess alkali to give beryllate and aluminate ions. In the light of the above statements. Choose the correct answer from the options given below.

Options

  1. ABoth statement I and Statement II are true
  2. BBoth statement I and Statement II are false
  3. CStatement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. DStatement I is false but Statement II is true

Correct answer

D. Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Step-by-step solution

The chlorides of both beryllium and aluminium have Cl– bridged chloride structure in vapour phase. Both the chlorides are soluble in organic solvents and are strong Lewis acids. They are used as Friedel Craft catalysts.

Be2Cl4{Be}_{2}{Cl}_{4} is lewis acid and Al2Cl6{Al}_{2}{Cl}_{6} has complete octet.

BeBe and AlAl are amphoteric metals therefore dissolve in acid as well as alkaline solution and form beryllate and aluminate ions in excess alkali.

Beryllium hydroxide dissolves in excess of alkali to give a beryllate ion,[Be(OH)4]2–[ Be ( OH{)}_{4}{]}^{2 –} just as aluminium hydroxide gives aluminate ion, [Al(H2O)2(OH)4]−[ Al{\left({H}_{2}O\right)}_{2} ( OH{)}_{4}{]}^{-}
